距今大约二十几年前,美国有一位专家格林都曼(Glenn Doman)在费城设立一所‘人类潜能成就研究社’,专门协助大脑受损伤的儿童从事学习的活动,由于效果卓著,后来灵机一动便将这种利用揭示片来教学的技术应用到一般常态的儿童,结果发现效果甚为不错,后来他根据这些临床经验写成一本书—‘如何教你的婴儿阅读’(How to Teach Your Baby to Read)结果出乎意料极为轰动,成为一九六四年最畅销的书籍之一,该书后来竟被翻译成十六种语言的版本,一九七九年,他又写了另一本书‘向你的宝贝教数学’(Teach Your Baby Math)最近又计划出版‘如何使你婴儿的智力倍增’(How to Multiply Your Baby's Intelligence)的著作。他一再向一般的家长表示:‘我们个人天赋的潜力都含有达文西、莫札特、米开兰基罗、爱迪生和爱因斯坦的能量,因此只要注意发掘,每一个人都能成就惊人的事业。’‘一般成人常常硬把孩子塑成所谓“孩子”的模样,事实上在这一段期间他们的学习量可说是最大,可惜很多人都忽视了这一点。’都曼曾经设计了一些特殊训练的课程,而且还为热心的家长设置一种特别讲习会,以便自行在家使用特殊设计的卡片向自己的婴孩从事教学。

I do not recommend people to use Glenn Doman's book ""How to Teach Your Baby to Read"" to teach baby to read english. I am a father of a 12-month old daughter and when she was 5-6 months old I have read both the Chinese and the English versions of that book. I started to use the method suggested in Doman's book to teach both Chinese and English words to my daughter. I thought that was wonderful and hoping that my baby could read by age 3. However as I subsequently have done more and more research on the internet and reading relevant books on english teaching for my baby, I realised that the Doman's method has been subject to a lot of criticisms in the USA for its ""whole language"" or ""whole word"" or ""look-say"" method of teaching english which treats english teaching like chinese teaching. English is different from chinese where the former is an phonetic language while the latter is ""graphical"" language. You cannot teach english using the graphical approach (by memorising the picture of each word and say that word).I have also learnt that for English teaching we should start from alphabets (as discouraged in Doman's book as would cause confusion to baby), then sound of alphabets and then phonics. After the baby has learnt phonis and know how to blend the sound of each word she would be ready to read anything. I am not a teacher, nor an educator. I am only a concerned parent like you. However I have the duty to know the pros and cons of each method I ""impose"" on my baby and therefore I have to do more research and reading. I finally stopped using the Doman's method and have now moving into the Spalding Method of teaching phonetics to my baby when she gets older. For the moment I just immerse my baby into a rich languague environment by reading to her lots of Chinese and English books and talk to her as much as possible. I also suggest the host of this website to remove the English words flash cards as the potential harmful effect of releasing them to uninformed parents outweigh the questionable benefit it would attain (if any).
